Job Summary
McCord Engineering, Inc. is looking for High Voltage Substation Designer at our College Station, Texas office. A technically minded individual that is self-motivated with a strong knowledge of substation design would excel at this position.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Creating substation design drawing packages and necessary documents for electric power substations ranging from 12kV to 500kV
- Develop new, or modify existing:
- Electrical layout/plan of substation equipment and structures
- Substation foundation layout/plan drawings
- Section/elevation views from layout/plan drawings
- Conduit layout/plan drawings
- Substation grounding layout/plan drawings
- Control building layout/plan and section/elevation drawings
- Prepare electrical schematics
- Complete electrical wiring design drawings
- Perform basic engineering calculations to support engineering design
- Maintain document management system with quality data
- Develop a complete bill of materials for all required electrical equipment and materials
- Utilize company standards, client standards, and/or Engineering direction to produce new drawings and update existing drawings utilizing AutoCAD, MicroStation.
- Train, develop and mentor the less-experienced design team members
- Review and comment on equipment drawings received from vendors and manufacturers
- Work with other disciplines as necessary to complete assigned work
- Assist the project team with developing processes and procedures to increase team efficiency
- At least 3 years’ experience in Design and/or Drafting disciplines with a background in Electrical substation
- Ability to develop protection and control drawings including schematics and wiring deliverables
- Ability to work in a growing, adaptive and multi-discipline team environment
- A combination of education and a demonstrated related experience may be considered in lieu of education and experience requirements
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; fluent in English language
- Solid comprehension and application of design software such as MicroStation and AutoCAD
- Proficient with Windows-based software such as Word and Excel, which are frequently used to develop project deliverables
- Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs
- Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment
- Experience working on EPC or other design-build Contract types
- Ability to work independently with limited direction and oversight
- Strong attention to detail and work product quality
- Legally able to work within the United States for any length of time

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
- You will play a crucial role in directly interfacing with utility/developer clients on Substation Physical methodologies, development of design deliverables for utility upgrades including greenfield/brownfield AIS substations.
- Prior experience in the design of utility transmission and distribution systems will be highly regarded
- You will provide engineering overview, expertise, and direction while acting as an independent technical advisor representing owner's interests
- You will be in a client interfacing position and will be responsible for understanding the client standards and protection philosophies, provide feedback on the application and be able to develop Substation design deliverables fully and independently as required for the projects on-time and within the budget
- As a Substation Physical Engineer within the group, you will mentor team members and junior engineers/designers.

- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) within United States and ability to obtain additional PE license in Texas
- Minimum 9 years of direct Substation Physical design experience with utility or consulting organization
- Familiarity with grounding system design and lighting and lightning protection designs for substation
- Prior experience in development and review of related equipment vendor specifications including control house/switchgear building
- Demonstrated ability to perform QA/QC of design calculations, construction drawings, and specifications
- Familiarity and experience with CADD platforms such as Autodesk or Bentley products
